What Is Kybella®?

Kybella is a non-surgical alternative to procedures like liposuction and chin lifts. As such, it’s minimally invasive. So, for the right candidate, it provides amazing results. In the 1970s, liposuction hit the plastic surgery scene. From there, it quickly gained popularity. Simply, it’s a surgical procedure that removes fat from various parts of your body, including your neck and chin (submental area). Following this, other surgical procedures like chin lifts (also known as a submentoplasty or a neck lift) gained popularity as well. In addition to removing excess fat, they also remove excess skin. In any case, both treatments share another commonality. They might not be for everyone. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable that virtually eliminates double chins without surgery. Who Is a Candidate for Kybella?

This treatment is designed for patients who have experienced continued concern over extra skin in the submental area, or the neck and the chin. Ideal candidates should be in relatively good health and should maintain a stable body weight leading up to the procedure. Pregnant or nursing patients would not be good candidates for Kybella. In addition, nonsmokers have a higher success rate with this procedure. Candidates should also be ready to talk about medical history, goals, and expectations to make sure Kybella is the right fit.

What to Expect During a Kybella Treatment

Before the treatment begins, the area will be thoroughly cleaned and might be marked to indicate injection sites. Photographs might be taken, as well, to compare to the results. Some patients may need multiple sessions, but many can achieve optimal results after one session. Using a thin needle, we will inject Kybella into the targeted area to eliminate fat cells and encourage the body to get rid of future fat cells that might accumulate. One session may require anywhere from 20 to 50 injections, and we will evaluate the area as we go to see if more injections are needed. Some discomfort is normal but is usually tolerable. 

Kybella Aftercare

Applying ice packs is a great way to reduce swelling and pain at home after the treatment. The treated area should not be touched more than necessary during the early recovery stage. Your head should be in an elevated position when you’re resting, and moisturizers can be applied to the area as early as the next day. Try to avoid excessive movement for the first few days to avoid further swelling. Small amounts of bleeding are not uncommon and should resolve on their own. Full results can be seen after 4-6 weeks in most patients, and results are typically permanent.
