Breast Implant Removal

Experts in Plastic Surgery

As people move through life and as their bodies change, it is not uncommon for their aesthetic goals to change, as well. In some cases, patients who have had breast implants may want them to be removed. This could reflect a change in their personal aesthetic desires, or it could be due to concerns about older implants or implants that were placed improperly during a past procedure. Some patients also experience buildup of scar tissue around previously placed implants, leading to medical concerns. Whatever the reason, if you find that you’re no longer happy with your implants, this removal procedure is an option to update your look.

What Is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal, otherwise known as explant surgery, is a procedure that can remove breast implants, as well as any scar tissue that may have built up over time. In most cases, scar tissue from breast implants is soft in nature–however, in some cases, it may have hardened. This procedure can also be done in the case of silicone leakage, which can pose health concerns. Implants can either be replaced or just removed. Implants should be replaced or taken out every 10-15 years.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

This procedure is ideal for people who are dissatisfied with their implants, people who are experiencing physical discomfort or hardening of scar tissue, and people who may be experiencing a ruptured implant or leakage of implant material. Ideal patients are relatively healthy and do not smoke, as smoking can increase risk of complications. Ideal patients are also willing to discuss their goals with us and work together to determine if this is the right procedure for them.

What to Expect During a Breast Implant Removal Procedure

A member of our team will discuss preparation with you beforehand, including any risks associated with this surgery. You might be asked to alter or briefly halt certain medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs. You should make travel arrangements to and from the facility and should have someone stay with you for the first night after you get home.

An anesthesia will be given either generally or intravenously to make sure you don’t experience discomfort during the surgery. Depending on your anatomy and the nature of your implants, we will either open the skin around the areola or under the inframammary fold. The implants will be removed, usually using a combination of techniques. Any hardened scar tissue or hardened silicone will be removed, as well, if this is present. New implants will either be inserted or not, depending on your preference. The incisions will be closed up and the procedure will be complete. This surgery can usually be done in under 3 hours.

Breast Implant Removal Aftercare

Patients can usually return home the day of the surgery. Bandages and a compressive garment will be given to make sure that you’re supported during your healing process. Pain medication or antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. In most cases, very small tubes will be inserted under the skin to drain any blood or fluid and prevent complications. These will be removed after a period of time. Our team will go over specific aftercare instructions with you, including how to care for your wounds and activity limitations.
