As they say, eyes are the windows to the soul. This is why, for many of us, our eyes are one of the first places we focus on when looking in the mirror. Many people are self-conscious about sagging of the eyelid area. If this has been a persistent issue for you, an eyelid lift is a procedure that offers a more lifted appearance, making sure your eyes are showcased.
What Is an Eyelid Lift?
An eyelid lift, or a blepharoplasty, takes away extra skin from around the eyelids. This can help address sagging eyelids, drooping eyebrows, and under-eye bags. Many of these conditions occur naturally with age. It can also help patients who are struggling to see peripherally due to sagging of the skin around the eyes. This procedure gives patients a more youthful, brighter appearance.
Who Is a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?
Patients with severe conditions of the eye or other serious medical conditions might not be candidates for this procedure. During your consultation, we’ll go over your medical history with you to make sure that you don’t have any conditions that could cause complications. Ideal candidates are relatively healthy and dedicated to leading a lifestyle that’s good for the body. Ideal candidates should also have an outlook that’s positive and be prepared to talk to us about their goals and desires, as well as what they’re expecting from this surgery.
What to Expect During an Eyelid Lift Procedure
Any risks of this surgery will be discussed with you thoroughly so you can make an informed decision. However, our team regularly performs this procedure and is dedicated to providing safe, effective care. You might be told to briefly stop taking certain medications, including anti-inflammatories. You should also arrange for transport to and from the surgery, and someone should stay with you the first night after you’re home to help you get comfortable and monitor early stages of recovery.
Local or intravenous anesthesia will be given to make sure you’re comfortable. If your upper eyelids are being targeted, an incision will be made on the eyelid fold and muscle, extra skin, and, in some cases, fat will be removed. If the lower eyelid is being targeted, an incision will either be made along the lashes or inside the eyelid. Skin, fat, or muscle will be taken out or repositioned to create the desired effect. After the cuts are closed up, the surgery will be complete.
Eyelid Lift Aftercare
After being monitored for a period of time, you’ll be allowed to return home. Certain symptoms are common after this surgery, including light sensitivity, swelling, puffiness, blurred vision, numbness, and discomfort. Ice packs are an excellent way to address these symptoms. You’ll also be given ointments or eyedrops to aid in the recovery process. You should expect to avoid strenuous exercise or activity for the first week of recovery. Our team will give you detailed instructions on how to care for yourself at home and minimize any discomfort.
